Ask any question

My name is Barry Heap, I’m a person trained counsellor I’m also an openly gay man and run a gay affirmative practice in Cheshire. This mean that I embrace sexuality as part of the work I do. When counselling has been reported in the news it has usually been in conjunction with anti-gay conversion horror stories but I assure you that would never be my intent. Indeed most of the professional bodies actually deem this practice to be unethical.

As a counsellor I have worked within the fields of bereavement, addiction and human sexualities. I cannot advise on anything of a medical nature but what I do in practice is give clients an insight into what is going on with their own lives from this perspective it empowers them to make choices going forward. According to statics within the gay community we are more likely to develop depression we are 4 times more likely to become an alcoholic.

Starting from next month I will be writing a column exclusively for The Gay UK where I will attempt to answer your problem’s and help you to come to your own decisions. I won’t advise you on what the best thing to do is or tell you what they do or what I would do as I am not you. I will offer you another voice, another view another perspective on what is happening with your life. From here you will begin to start your own healing process and take the control back in the situation. The page is called the dilemmas because that’s exactly what we face, it’s not a problem page and I’m certainly not an agony aunt. I’m a therapist.

Trust me, I’m not easily shocked or likely to be offended by anything you want to ask or need to talk about. I’m certainly not one to judge. All letters will be published under a different name so your anonymity will be preserved. Unfortunately I will not be able to reply to letters personally and any emails sent would be deemed fit for publishing.

So please email me on barry.heap@thegayuk.com and we can begin the process together.
