The University of California, Merced is the newest and tenth campus of the University of California system and the first American research university built in the 21st century. Using knowledge and skills as a seasoned, experienced Student Services professional, performs the full range of duties and responsibilities within a Student Life specialization. Provides information and interpretation of complex policies, procedures and regulations. Identifies student needs for programs and services. Works independently under general supervision.

Based on the foundational principles of leadership, service and social justice, the Office of Student Life is charged with providing an engaging and educational co-curricular experience for UC Merced students. The Coordinator of Student Life – Women’s Programs and LGBT Initiatives, under the direction of the Director of Student Life and Conduct, supports this mission by working as a key member of the Student Life team to manage the day-to-day operations, programs, policy development, and long-range planning for all student life programs, facilities, and initiatives.

The Coordinator will have responsibility for the programmatic development, support, service, education, and advocacy for the program areas of Women’s Programs and LGBT Initiatives.

Independently handles individual cases regarding student affairs or student life, and/or oversees limited programs, as described below.

Women’s Programs:

Develops programs centered on women and gender issues. This focus includes programs providing support, service, education, and advocacy regarding women and gender issues.•

Sponsor cultural/educational events and services promoting awareness and understanding of various issues affecting women and gender roles in society today, including but not limited to: Women & the Wilderness Backpacking Trip; Fat Talk Free Week; Love Your Body Day; Fab Feminism Week; Human and Sex Trafficking awareness; Women’s History Month events; Women of Color Banquet; Women’s Empowerment Conference; Outstanding Women’s Luncheon; Elect Her—Campus Women Win; The Dish; Sexual Assault Awareness Month events; Denim Day; Walk for Change; and The 11th Hour.•

Facilitate community engagement through development of the Lift While You Lead Mentoring Network, a community partnership with the local Role of Women in Society high school classes.•

Develop and maintain the Women’s Resource Library of books, films, etc.•

Represent Women’s Programs, as requested and appropriate, at meetings and conferences within and outside the UC system.

LGBT Initiatives:•

Develops resources and networks through campus/community partnerships in support of the UC Merced LGBT community. Efforts will include support, resource services, education, and advocacy to, for, and about the LGBT community.

Advises students on gender and sexuality concerns/services, including women’s, lesbian, bi-sexual, gay, and transgender issues.•

Develop LGBT and social justice related programs, trainings, workshops, and provide support and advocacy on issues of power, privilege, and intersecting identities such as race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, etc. and increase campus-wide dialogue and understanding on topics related to the LGBT Community.

Develop, a workshop/film/lecture series promoting LGBT awareness and the understanding.•

Serve on a campus committee providing insight, feedback and recommendations to University administrators regarding the LGBT community.•

Provide advice, mediation, and support to student organizations and student leaders.

Coordinate and facilitate large and small-scale annual programs, activities, workshops, mentor programs, and signature events.•

Chair work-group and collaborate with other departments to develop and maintain Safe Zone Project.

Develops and maintains relationships with internal and external campus stakeholders critical to program success.

General Administration:

Participate in overall planning and of the Office of Student Life including, student staff hiring, training, supervision and evaluation.•

Assist with planning, implementation, and staffing of various OSL and campus activities and events such as Welcome Week, Family Weekend, Preview Day, Bobcat Day and Orientation.

Monitor, manage, and analyze program and supply budgets and accounts.

Solicit funds and coordinate fund raising for programmatic activities.

Develop and implement evaluations and assessments for student programs and unit goals.

Manage content and update department web-pages.

Lead set up and support of technical equipment (i.e sound, lights, and computer equipment) for OSL programs and student events.

Coordinate, facilitate and support, evening and weekend programs.

Provide supervisor with regular updates, quarterly and annual reports.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training

•Master’s in Student Affairs, Education, Counseling, or closely related field preferred.

•Thorough knowledge of advising, counseling and crisis management techniques and ability to counsel, refer and advise individuals and groups of students.

•Knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs and University risk assessment and evaluation principles and procedures.

•Proven experience with college & University student life programs. Thorough knowledge of Student Affairs/Student Life specializations of Women’s Programs and LGBT Initiatives including topics of Social Justice, power, privilege, oppression, and intersectionality.

•Direct or related experience working with diverse student populations including race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, socio-economic background, religion, class, etc.

•Excellent judgment, decision-making, and problem solving skills. Ability to identify performance and process improvements.

•Ability to work with a diverse set of colleagues, supervisees, administrators, students, faculty, staff, and other parties in reviewing procedures, setting policy, resolving problems, and following through to implement change.

•Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to create and deliver engaging, informative and persuasive presentations to internal and external groups.

•Ability to lead and facilitate groups, write complex and comprehensive reports, letters, marketing copy, and other documents.

•Skill and temperament to provide and open climate and create opportunities for strong collaborations, cross cultural communication, and department interaction.

•Skill to work independently and ability to be inventive and creative, including but not limited to initiating new programs, conceptualizing, organizing, and implementing change.

•Ability to foresee needed change, set realistic goals and objectives, organize resources, and schedule the efforts of others to achieve goals.

•Working knowledge, understanding, and experience with student, leadership and community development theory and student conduct philosophy, procedures, practice and assessment.

Skill and experience in writing, interpreting, implementing and enforcing policy.
