Somebody murdered 6-year-old Alanna Gallagher and left her body under a tarp in the middle of a street. Police are still investigating the terrible crime, and the community is in mourning. It’s likely that no one is more upset than her parents.

All three of them.

Miles McDaniel, Karl Gallagher and Laura Gallagher are in a polyamorous relationship.

“Anybody who knows the family knows that there are three parents in the family. You can go talk to the school, you can talk to the church,” said McDaniel to reporters, after being questioned at the Saginaw Police Department.

So, what is polyamory? According to The Polyamory Society:

“Polyamory is the nonpossessive, honest, responsible and ethical philosophy and practice of loving multiple people simultanously.  Polyamory emphasizes consciously choosing how many partners one wishes to be involved with rather than accepting social norms which dictate loving only one person at a time.  Polyamory is an umbrella term which integrates traditional mutipartner relationship terms with more evolved egalitarian terms.  Polyamory embraces sexual equality and all sexual orientations towards an expanded circle of spousal intimacy and love.  Polyamory is from the root words Poly meaning many and Amour meaning love hence “many loves” or Polyamory.”

Polyamorists pretty much decide what works for them. They ‘write their own ticket,’ so to speak. A polyamorous relationship could consist of multiple men, multiple women, or any mix in between. Polyamorists mostly feel that a monogamous male/female family structure isn’t enough for a healthy relationship.

However, polyamorists try to distance themselves from the ‘swinger’ community. Swingers are couples who live in open relationships, having sex with people outside their primary relationship. Polyamorists focus more on having emotional connections as well as physical ones.
