In the past few years, the circumstances of sexual minorities around the world have dramatically changed, and Japan is no exception. And while sexual minorities have been shown by various Japanese media outlets, I feel that there are still many people who are unaware of their existence.

We have great films from all over the world for the festival this year. For people who wonder, “What is a sexual minority?”, for people who doubt the existence of them, for people who may be questioning their own sexuality, and for sexual minorities themselves who have worries about their way of life… these films can make audiences in different situations feel and think many different things. I hope that by watching and enjoying the various films, as well as feeling the atmosphere of the festival, it will encourage you.

Tokyo International Lesbian & Gay Film Festival (TILGFF) is an annual event that has been held ever since its foundation in 1992.

It was founded with a mission to seek for equal rights for the homosexual community when the homosexuality was not as well understood in our society as it currently is. Over the years, the size of the event has grown and the quality of the films has improved. Today it is a “festival” where the sexual minority enjoys their beings as well as an “art event” where the heterosexual audience can experience the rich lesbian and gay culture.

TILGFF ranks as one of the largest and oldest events of its kind in Asia, drawing as many as 5000-6000 attendees every year.
