TECH REVIEW: X-mini Kai 2 Portable Speaker

When approached to test drive this tiny little speaker, I didn’t expect too much in terms of sound quality. Not everything in a small package is good, but figured it was worth a go.

★★★★

However, it knocked my little cotton socks off! This tiny speaker packs so much into such a small space and sacrifices nothing in terms of quality.

It’s fairly easy to set up, even for an ageing dodderer like me!

The design is so simple and yet spot on – it compacts down to a tiny 62.0mm x 52.0mm and there nothing on this baby that isn’t needed, so no fancy go faster strips, no useless features or buttons, just good, honest simple design that makes for a product that works. I love that fact that one twist and it pops up, take the rubber stop out of the top and you have an instant base and you also uncover the coolest ceramic drivers.

Now, I like my speakers simple and easy to use mainly for my music when I work at home – however, this little baby makes use of the latest ways you kids converse! The manufacturers have taken into account the world of online communication and this speaker is ideal for use with Skype, FaceTime, etc to enhance your listening and communication pleasure! One thing that appealed to me was the conferencing possibilities – who needs one of those spider phones now? Huh?

My only gripe with this is that, as with a lot of items these days, the instructions are minimal, which is understandable in this world where products can be sold in a zillion different markets and who wants a huge manual to wade through to find your language version? However, my speaker came with a flat battery which meant trying to decipher how to charge it from the icon driven instructions only, but once that was done, it was a joy to use. I found it easier to use via bluetooth rather than cables, but one major selling point of these is that you can daisy chain them so create your own bespoke sound system – you do know how to daisy chain, don’t you?

Price:

The good news, the price is RRP £39.95 and you can get one from major High Street retailers and online via Amazon, etc.

I have a few different speaker systems for my iPod Classic, etc and take one away with me on holidays – this lovely little number will now replace that slightly cumbersome speaker system as it has everything in one small package and takes up no space at all!
