INTERVIEW – Equal Marriage, Gay Rights and Gay Pride: Responses from UCP leader Jason Kenny from back in June 2004 when he was running for the Federal Conservatives

With the upcoming 2019 provincial election, we wanted to showcase past interviews that we have done with Jason Kenny (when he was running in the 2004 federal election for the Conservatives), Stephan Mandel (when he was mayor of Edmonton), and David Kahn (when he was looking to become the leader of the Alberta Liberals).  We had not interviewed Rachel Notley yet, but have GayCalgary has… Read the rest

INTERVIEW – Equal Marriage, Gay Rights and Gay Pride: Responses from UCP leader Jason Kenney from back in June 2004 when he was running for the Federal Conservatives

From GayCalgary Magazine June 2004, Issue 8

With the upcoming 2019 provincial election, we wanted to showcase past interviews that we have done with Jason Kenney (when he was running in the 2004 federal election for the Conservatives), Stephan Mandel (when he was mayor of Edmonton), and David Khan (when he was looking to become the leader of the Alberta Liberals).  We had not interviewed Rachel Notley yet, but have GayCalgary has interviewed three NDP MLA’s which speaks to what the Alberta NDP Party is about.

In June 2004, GayCalgary did interviews with candidates running for the Federal election in the Calgary area. With the amount of people that responded to our three questions, we had missed that we had interviewed Jason Kenney, who is now the leader of the United Conservative Party (UCP).  You can read the whole article Federal Election Candidates in Calgary: Question and Answer (June 2004, Issue 8) at http://www.gaycalgary.com/a760.

The following is the excerpt of what questions had been asked of Jason Kenney and how he responded to them.

“With elections happening just around the corner…

Positive Thoughts – My Poz Heroes: How writing about people living with HIV inspired profound change in my own life

About a year and a half ago, I was in a dark place. After a painful separation from the love of my life, I felt not only completely broken inside but also scared as hell. And I needed a job, pronto. After all, I was a single mom now and I had mouths to feed.

After weeks of job searching and getting turned down for employment by both Target and a local RV dealership, you could say my sense of self-worth wasn’t the greatest. I was on the verge of turning 40, jobless, broke, and very, very sad. At that point, I lacked the motivation to even try to apply at another crappy job that I didn’t want. But the what the hell was I going to do?

Well, I did the only thing you can do when life has you by the huevos and you’re doing the best you can, despite the overwhelming odds against you at the moment – I left it to the Universe. I very consciously put out this “wish” of sorts; this hope, this prayer: Let me find a job that needs me…

“Come From Away” Worth the Hype: Canadian Production makes Calgary debut

At first glance, the concept behind Come From Away seems to be an odd one. A musical about Gander, Newfoundland hosting 7000 stranded passengers in the wake of 9-11? Yet since being workshopped at Sheraton College in Oakville just 7 years ago, the show somehow became a massive success in San Diego, Seattle, Washington DC and Toronto before opening up on Broadway in March of… Read the rest

Tips for Selling Your Home in a Booming Market

The housing market goes through its ups and downs – this is a natural cycle that real estate professionals carefully watch. Often, it follows the overall state of the economy. When the economy is down, fewer people are buying homes. When it’s doing well, more people are looking to invest in properties.

Chicago in Four Days (with little to no sleep)

When we travel to a new city, we hit it hard. Forget about coming home relaxed and rejuvenated, we’re there to experience what the city has to offer, less so as tourists, but more like a local would. We do the deep dive, 20,000 steps a day, 2,000 photos and a handful of new Facebook friends by the time we return home.

Chicago has been… Read the rest

Positive Thoughts: The Cranky Queer’s Guide to Chronic Illness

Hello. How are you? Yeah, you’re fine, I know. So am I.

It’s the kind of fine where it’s the third time in four days that I wake up at 2:30 a.m. And no, it’s not Trump – or not just that. I’m sick, and in physical pain, and my heart is pounding and my mind racing.

Given that it’s a familiar routine at this… Read the rest

The Best Time to Buy a Home

For some purchases, prices change depending on the time of the year. If you’re purchasing items to use outdoors during the warmer months, for example, they’re usually cheaper in the winter since fewer people are buying them. When you’re looking at vehicles, the general rule of thumb is to buy later in the month when sales associates are more desperate to make their quota. Does… Read the rest

Oh What A Night!: Stage West’s “Jersey Boys” a knockout

Since 2005 Jersey Boys – a jukebox musical about Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons – has been wowing audiences around the world. The 2006 Tony Award winner for best musical was turned into a film directed by Clint Eastwood (and featured Stage West alumni Michael Lomenda starring as Nick Massi) and closed last year on Broadway.
