Equality House Presents the First Gay Wedding Directly Across the Street From the Infamous Westboro Baptist Church

On June 22, Equality House will be hosting its first wedding! Kimberly Kidwell and Katie Short of Little Rock, Arkansas, will celebrate their love and commitment with a marriage ceremony on our front lawn — which if you haven’t heard, sits directly across the street from the infamous Westboro Baptist Church. The wedding will begin at 8 PM and the press is invited to cover this momentous event.

Several organizations and businesses in the greater Topeka area have rallied around this event, generously donating time, money, and resources in order to make this ceremony possible. We at the Equality House believe our fight to end discrimination and injustice means emphasizing the love and happiness of people like Kimberly and Katie.

According to a Gallup poll taken in May of 2013, we’ve reached a tipping point in the U.S., with the majority of people supporting marriage equality But we know we still have a long way to go. Supreme Court decisions regarding LGBTQ rights loom, and the majority of states, including Kansas and Arkansas, still fail to recognize gay men and women’s basic human rights. Equality House believes standing with Kimberly and Katie in a spirit of celebration will serve as an important symbol in the fight for equality. Please join us in this momentous, happy occasion, the first of many planned at the Equality House.
