Housing Works is seeking a one-year Policy Fellow to further HIV Law Project’s policy agenda to fight for the rights of the most underserved people living with HIV /AIDS in New York City. This includes raising awareness about and addressing the unique needs of women living with and at risk of contracting HIV ; promoting the rights of young people living with HIV and advocating for aggressive HIV prevention and care efforts targeting young people; and ensuring that people living with HIV have meaningful, living-wage employment opportunities.

Policy Fellow HIV Law Project

HIV Law Project, the legal services subsidiary of Housing Works, meets the legal and advocacy needs of those who find themselves on the margins of the AIDS epidemic due to their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, or economic status. HIV Law Project was the first, and today remains the only, legal agency providing comprehensive legal services exclusively to low-income people living with HIV/AIDS in New York City, particularly women and their families, people of color, undocumented and recent immigrants, members of the LGBT community, and homeless persons. Through innovative legal services, policy initiatives, and advocacy programs, HIV Law Project fights for the rights and dignity of the most underserved people living with HIV/AIDS in New York City.

Responsibilities

  • Design and promote key elements of an HIV policy platform.
  • Educate legislators and other policymakers about HIV Law Project’s policy priorities.
  • Lead the research and writing of a collaborative study.
  • Represent HIV Law Project in coalitions and work closely with coalition members to advance shared policy goals.
  • Conduct legal and policy research and analysis.
  • Present at conferences, trainings, and public hearings.

Qualifications

  • J.D. or M.P.H. (or comparable experience)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Familiarity with federal and state legislative systems (legislative or policy advocacy experience preferred)
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, human rights, and the rights of marginalized communities
  • Knowledge of/experience with HIV and/or related health and social justice issues
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Reliable and organized
  • Experience working with diverse communities
  • Commitment to the full 12-month term of the fellowship

Schedule and Compensation
This fellowship is a full-time position (40 hours/week) that will last for 12 months. Salary is commensurate with experience, and a generous benefits package, including health insurance, is provided.
