Substitute Outreach Workers will engage in face to face encounters with young people using the Christopher Street Pier and other neighborhoods where homeless youth congregate, during the hours of 10pm-2am with the goal of facilitating a safe transition to young people’s second destination when Pier 45 closes. Outreach workers will be insightful professionals concerned with the well-being of young people using the Pier and West Village neighborhood as a safe space to express their identities as well as de-escalate tensions arising from cultural differences between members of the West Village Community. Outreach workers will also plan and facilitate extended hours workshops on-site at The Door.

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate safe and respectful transition from Pier to second destination after Pier 45 closes.
  • Establish rapport with young people based on consistency and helpful interventions/conversations.
  • Provide crisis intervention when needed.
  • Provide referral information for LGBT youth programming and social activities in NYC.
  • Engage in community conversations/networking with other stake holders (i.e. police, residents, service providers).
  • Collect basic information pertaining to young people’s needs.
  • Maintain and prepare crisis food packages, safer sex kits, and hygiene supplies
  • Attend training at The Door pertaining to outreach encounter strategies.
  • Adhere to professional boundaries between self and youth.
  • Meet weekly with Supervisor for planning and evaluation.
  • Plan and facilitate enrichment activities for Wednesday night programming.
  • Complete other relevant duties as requested by supervisor.

Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or GED required
  • Knowledge of LGBT youth issues and history of Christopher Street Pier
  • Experience working with at-risk street involved youth
  • Commitment to professionalism and ability to maintain a professional attitude as a staff representative of the Door
  • Ability to engage young people in conversations about sexuality and HIV/STIs
  • Familiarity with homeless youth issues
  • Knowledge of the NYC youth-service system
  • Training in youth empowerment philosophy and harm reduction
  • Training in de-escalation/ conflict mediation

Hours: As needed, Fridays and Saturdays 10pm-2am
Salary: $18-20 per hour
