Internet giant Yahoo censors the results that the hashtags #Gay #Lesbian and #Bisexual provide on its new acquisition Tumblr.

IBTimes is reporting that a new search policy, which is aimed at reducing the number of porn blogs on Tumblr, has effectively rendered searching the terms gay, lesbian and bisexual via a hastag unusable.
The new policy went into effect on the same day that and update to Tumblr’s iOS app, which removed search results for gay, lesbian and bisexual content.
The move is consistent with Apple’s anti-porn policy, but it also effectively stops the LGBT community communicating through easy to use hastags.
Writing on Jezebel.com user Hermionestrangerwrote:
“They say this is because those tags return too much porn. I say it’s because our very existence is seen as obscene, and that this is a crackdown on our very identities. I’m sick of our sex being the first to be censored, and worried about all the queer kids who live in homophobic homes with homophobic parents but who found some comfort on Tumblr.”
TheGayUK tried a number of search terms on the service. The term gay brought no articles or blogs, however the search function did allow for the terms fag, queer and faggot to be searched.
In a statement to TheGayUK a spokeswoman for Tumblr said:
“Some search terms are blocked (returning no results) in some of our mobile apps. Unfortunately, different app environments have different requirements that we do our best to adhere to. The reason you see innocent tags like #gay being blocked on certain platforms is that they are still frequently returning adult content which our entire app was close to being banned for. The solution is more intelligent filtering which our team is working diligently on. We’ll get there soon. In the meantime, you can browse #lgbtq — which is moderated by our community editors — in all of Tumblr’s mobile apps. You can also see unfiltered search results on tumblr.com using your mobile web browser.”
