Current reporting in the United Kingdom has HIV being discussed by national publications or deferring to charities like the National AIDS Trust or Terrence Higgins Trust, depending on them for real-life experiences are discussions. To try and focus the relationship that people living with HIV and their friends, family, and partners have with the media, Tom Hayes, also known as UKPositiveLad, created beyondpositive. This is with the aim to create a space where, for example, diet advice for those living on anti-retroviral medication and tips for getting a decent nights’ sleep can be shared with those who could benefit most.

Tom Hayes, Editor-in-Chief, said, “People living with HIV are now living far longer than was anticipated thirty years ago. This means that reporting on it, and the issues surrounding those who it affects, needs to change. It’s not enough for charities to be forwarding internal communications and releasing statements to the press, and publications currently available for and by the HIV+ community seem to come from the US at present. This is why beyondpositive is so unique.”

The phrase ‘people living with HIV’ is thrown around a lot these days, but when we say it here at beyondpositive we don’t just mean the person with HIV, we mean everyone in their lives – their family, friends and partners.
