Is hip-hop ready for an openly gay artist? Sure, breakout rapper Frank Ocean came out back in 2012, but not everyone in the hip-hop community was supportive. But Lil Wayne isn’t letting any potential prejudice prevent him from signing Fly Young Red, the creator of the highly buzzed about “Throw That Boy P***y.”

The ‘Young Money’ CEO stated, “Good music is good music. Gay, straight, black, white, blue, or purple. Good music is just good music. Have you ever been in the club when that joint came on? N*g*** go crazy when that drop. I had to make him YMCMB.”

Though Lil Wayne doesn’t seem to have any doubts about the young rapper’s future in the industry, some critics say the song may be taking the worst parts of hip-hop and applying them to a new set of consumers. There’s no doubt that Fly Young’s single and its accompanying music video are challenging hip-hop norms, but is it creating a space for gay men within the genre or just transposing objectification onto a new class?

In his first and only TV interview, Fly Young Red told Fusion’s Alicia Menendez that he wrote “Throw That Boy P***y” for gay club go-ers exclusively, but that he eventually wants to expand his audience. Though he’s happy the song has sparked a conversation around hip-hop’s homophobic culture, he doesn’t want to be known as just a “gay rapper.” Lil Wayne may help him accomplish just that.
