Leading UK HIV Specialist, Martin Fisher Dies

Professor Martin Fisher a leading HIV specialist has died. He was instrumental in field of HIV medicine and research over two decades.

He was the first professor of HIV medicine at Brighton & Sussex Medical School and an honorary consultant physician in sexual health & HIV at Brighton and Sussex University Hospital. He is survived by his long-term partner Adrian. Mr Fisher was due to give the keynote address at this year’s annual BHIVA conference.

Condolences have been flooding in from healthcare professionals around the country as news spread of his death.

Dr Rosemary Gillespie, Chief Executive at Terrence Higgins Trust said:

“We are really sad to learn about the death of our friend and colleague Professor Martin Fisher. He did incredibly important work in the field of HIV and sexual health for two decades in Brighton. Martin treated many of our clients from our Brighton centre and his legacy will continue. We would like to express our deepest condolences to Martin’s partner Adrian, his friends, family and colleagues. He will be greatly missed.”

A statement from the National AIDs Trust read:

“NAT wishes to express our sadness at news of the death of Professor Martin Fisher, Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals and Brighton and Hove Medical School, and express our condolences and deep sympathy to his partner, family and friends. The HIV sector and community in Brighton, the UK and internationally have lost an outstanding clinician and scientist. Martin worked with NAT on a number of projects and was a member of our clinical advisory group. We will miss him greatly. “

A Book Of Condolence will be available at the 21st Annual Conference of the British HIV Association, Brighton, 21-24 April 2015.

The cause of his death has not been released, however he was found at his home. A spokesperson from the Sussex police said:

“At 12.30am on Tuesday police were called to an address in Clifton Hill, Brighton, where a 50-year old man who lived there had been found dead.

“There are no suspicious circumstances and the Coroners Officer will be continuing enquiries.”
