John Arthur & Jim Obergefell are Legally Married, Despite Disease and Laws

“We’re now getting federal recognition, and that’s the impetus to make it happen, because we’re tax-paying citizens of the United States,” said John Arthur, in an interview posted on Cincinnati.com.

It’s a really heart-warming story. Arthur and his partner of more than 20 years, Jim Obergefell, traveled to Maryland to be legally married. In Maryland, same-sex marriage is legal. However, the couple lives in Ohio, where it isn’t.

When the U.S. Supreme Court struck down DOMA, it allowed for federal recognition of legally married same-sex couples. Those are the rights the couple hopes to take advantage of.

“That federal recognition really makes me feel like a citizen,” said Arthur.

If DOMA had been overturned in 2012, it would have been as simple as a trip to Maryland. However, Arthur has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Thanks to the donations of friends and family, the couple was able to make the trip. It cost thousands of dollars because of Arthur’s special medical needs.

Still, they did make it. The couple married July 11, 2013.

Cincinnati.com was there for the whole trip. Check it out:
