The incident that caused a mob to set upon two men thought to be gay

It has been reported that two men who were involved in a car crash on the 23rd August, had to retreat when angry residents claimed they were gay. The men were able to seek refuse in a nearby police station.

A statement from the LGBT Department at the National Anti-Discrimination Alliance said,

‘It’s clear that even the slightest perception can put a person’s life in danger as the men only “appeared to be homosexuals”, and by what standards we are unclear. Less than a week ago a similar incident occurred where a mob of people barricaded five men in a house. Again the men were only perceived to be gay by a similar stereotype.

The now almost weekly reports of mobbing and murders of gays in Jamaica are a far cry from the “Increasing pockets of Tolerance” stated by the Executive Director of J -FLAG, Dane Lewis in his recent CNN Interview. One may be forced to think that, just maybe the barbaric slaughter of Dwayne Jones in July was in fact not an anomaly after all. Maybe Jamaica is still one of the worlds’ most homophobic countries.’
