Gay Marriage Legalized in England and Wales, Queen Elizabeth II Approves

Same-sex couples will be able to legally marry in England and Wales next summer. Wednesday morning, Queen Elizabeth II gave her royal stamp of approval on The Marriage Bill. Lawmakers passed it earlier this week. The Queen’s signature is the necessary last step for a bill to become law.

The bill allows gay couples to marry in both civil and religious ceremonies. However, the Church of England, which was divided on the issue, is barred from conducting same-sex weddings.

Currently, England and Wales allow gay couples to enter into civil unions. Couples who entered into civil unions will be able to convert their unions to legally-recognized marriages.
