The Director will work with their team to ensure innovative programs with measurable outcomes are designed and delivered to LGBT older adults throughout New York City.

Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE) is the country’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older adults. Founded in 1978 and headquartered in New York City, SAGE is a national organization that offers supportive services and consumer resources for LGBT older adults and their caregivers, advocates for public policy changes that address the needs of LGBT older people, and provides cultural competency training for aging providers and LGBT organizations, largely through its National Resource Center on LGBT Aging and its growing social entrepreneurship project. With offices in New York City, Washington, DC and Chicago, SAGE coordinates a growing network of 27 SAGE affiliates in 20 states and the District of Columbia. This position will report to the Senior Director for Services and Training. The position is full-time.

Essential Functions:

The Director of SAGE Centers will be responsible for the oversight of all of SAGE’s Innovative Senior Center sites, and will lead the teams responsible for program implementation at SAGE’s flagship Innovative Center in Midtown Manhattan as well as for the start-up of SAGE’s new expansion Center sites in Harlem, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Staten Island. The Director will work with their team to ensure innovative programs with measurable outcomes are designed and delivered to LGBT older adults throughout New York City.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Overseeing and coordinating programs and operations at all SAGE Centers;
  • Supervising Assistant Director of SAGE Centers as well as SAGE Center site Managers;
  • Developing and monitoring program budget(s) with Director of Services and Training;
  • Overseeing collection of performance data on key indicators;
  • Attending community meetings and representing the SAGE Center externally;
  • Cultivating and maintaining relationships with community providers;
  • Management of government contracts (DFTA, DOH) and other funding sources (including program narratives, performance monitoring, site visits and budgeting);
  • Involvement in recruiting, interviewing and hiring SAGE Center staff; and
  • Other duties, as assigned, by the Senior Director for Services and Training .

Required Skills/Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in social work, public administration or equivalent degree, plus a minimum of 3 years of experience in a nonprofit setting. Substantial work experience (7+) in nonprofit program development and management, especially in the aging or LGBT fields, may be substituted for master’s degree; related field.
  • Minimum five (5) years supervisory and managerial experience in social service community-based programs.
  • Entrepreneurial thinker, who is self-directed, creative and able to exercise independent judgment;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Computer proficient, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, an ability to identify and integrate the perspectives and needs of diverse communities, and an ability to work in partnership with various types and sizes of organizations a must; and
  • A commitment to the issues, constituencies and values of SAGE.

Strongly Desired Qualifications

  • Substantive knowledge of and/or prior work experience in the aging or LGBT fields, including working knowledge of history and issues facing more marginalized older adults;
  • Fluency (verbal and written) in Spanish;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize activities and meet deliverables under deadlines;
  • Capacity and a desire to gain new skills and knowledge to drive innovative programming;
  • Cultural and linguistic competency in regards to age, ability, sexuality, gender identity and expression, race, ethnicity, class and other characteristics that affect the lives of diverse older adults and shape the nature of the SAGE’s endeavors; and
  • Understanding of performance measurement and management, and a strong desire to implement metrics to evaluate the impact and the effectiveness of SAGE.
