Britain’s gay marriage bill, “The Marriage Bill,” passed through the House of Lords Monday. Now, it goes back to the House of Commons, for some procedural stuff. Then, it’s off to Queen Elizabeth II to be signed into law. Gay rights advocates in the UK are hoping lawmakers have the bill ready to be signed by the end of the week.
The Marriage Bill will allow same-sex couples to get married in both civil and religious ceremonies in England and Wales. The Church of England is barred from offering gay weddings.
Currently, gay couples can have civil unions. Gay couples will be able to marry by summer 2014, if not earlier.
