In 2013, the Tarrant County Gay Pride Week Association (yep, that’s TCGPWA) celebrates its 32nd anniversary. Considering its long history, TCGPWA has a lot to celebrate. For anyone who’s curious, no, Tarrant County Pride is not the red-headed step child of Dallas gay pride. As a matter of fact, this year, Fort Worth’s LGBT celebration will officially span a total of ten days (Oct. 3-13).
The city of ‘Cowboys and Culture’ is a lot more accepting than a North Texas outsider might think. Just check out the Fort Worth Convention & Visitors Bureau’s Pride WORTHy page, catered specifically to LGBT visitors.
Pride [extra-long] week kicks off October 3, with a party at Club Reflection in Fort Worth.
On Saturday, October 5, the 2013 Tarrant County Pride Parade begins at noon, from Weatherford Street, and runs south down Houston. The Pride Street Festival at General Worth Square (Houston and 9th) runs until 6pm.
Sunday, October 5, the annual Pride Picnic runs from noon – 6p at the Arts Pavilion in Trinity Park. It’s described as the “largest GLBT family-friendly event held in Tarrant County.” This year we celebrate the 32nd anniversary of what was, reportedly, a parade started by “a drag queen who wanted a place for gays to congregate that wasn’t between the four walls of a bar.”
On Monday, the celebration continues with a panel on progress made since the Fort Worth Police and TABC raid of the Rainbow Lounge in 2009. “Diversity and Progress in the City of Fort Worth – Implementing Positive Change,” is from 5:30p to 7:30p at Celebration Community Church.
Thursday, one of North Texas’ most popular events, QCinema, kicks off its 15th anniversary. This is the film festival that presented the Southwest premieres of Trick, But I’m a Cheerleader, All Over the Guy, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and Adam and Steve (just to name a few.)
In other words, it’s a big deal.
On Thursday, October 10, QCinema offers the Southwest Premiere of Del Shores’ filmed version of his play Southern Baptist Sissies. For the rest of the weekend, there are plenty of films and special guests, including Shores.
