UNNECESSARY HEADLINE ALERT: Texas’ Republican Candidates Oppose Gay Rights

(GayWebSource.com – Gay Media & Press Network) – Posted by

All the Texas Republicans running for statewide office oppose gay rights, according to an AP story publish Saturday. The AP sent a survey out to the Republican candidates for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general. No big surprise there by their anti-gay stances, but some of their answers are kind of surprising.

One example is Attorney General Greg Abbott’s response when the AP asked if he thinks “that homosexuality is a disorder that requires treatment?”

“I am not a doctor, a scientist or God. I cannot render judgment on a person’s sexuality. I can, however, refer you to the American Psychological Association on the matter,” Abbott responded.

The APA removed homosexuality from its list of disorders in 1975. So, does that mean Abbott’s answer was “no?” Why not just say, “No?”

Everyone else surveyed avoided answering that question.

The survey also showed that the candidates widely supported the state’s ban on same-sex marriage and opposed non-discrimination bans (such as the one just passed by San Antonio) because they violate people’s freedom of religion.

Read more of the AP’s survey responses over at Chron.com.

Will Wendy Davis Enter TX Gov. Race? Announcement is Oct. 3

(GayWebSource.com – Gay Media & Press Network) – Posted by

Wendy Davis is ready to address all of the rumors about her running for Texas Governor. She’ll address those rumors on October 3rd, according to a news release from her communications team late Tuesday.

Funny thing is, this was supposed to be “embargoed” information. In the top, center of the news release it said, “EMBARGOED UNTIL SEPTEMBER 18, 2013 at 9AM.” In other words, we knew about it, but weren’t “allowed” to report on it until the campaign said we could. It’s probably because Wendy Davis’ campaign (I’m assuming here) scheduled her email to send at 9am Wednesday.

Unfortunately (for the campaign), the Associated Press ignored the embargo. As stories started popping up online, I had to email the campaign. This was the response, from Hector Nieto:

“Embargoed meant all of it until 9am, but as you noted, AP already ignored the embargo. Thank you for checking, but feel free to report as you see fit.”

Well, this blog post is what I see fit.

I hope you feel informed about an announcement (about an announcement) that wasn’t supposed to be officially announced until 9am Wednesday.

Yay?

The more you know.

Why ‘Dallas Voice’ Editor John Wright Says He Was Fired

(GayWebSource.com – Gay Media & Press Network) – Posted by

john wright 300x199 Why Dallas Voice Editor John Wright Says He Was Fired

via Facebook

Monday night, John Wright announced on Facebook he’d just been fired from his position as senior editor of the Dallas Voice.

As is often the case in personnel issues, the owners aren’t saying much.

“John has his opinion, and we have ours, and they are not the same,” Leo Cusimano, the publisher, told The Dallas Morning News. “We stand by the actions we took.”

However, Wright has a lot to say about his former employers. This is why he got fired, in his words:

OK so here goes. I have poured my heart and soul into Dallas Voice for the last six-and-a-half years. I’ve worked my ass off for minimal pay because I loved my job and I loved fighting for equality. As a reward, I was unceremoniously fired Monday for alleged insubordination, which is a totally false and slanderous charge. I can tell you that I did absolutely nothing wrong, and my termination was unjust, immoral and just plain wrong.

Roughly six months ago, the original owner of the Voice, Robert Moore, sold the newspaper to his ex-husband whom he had recently divorced, Terry Thompson, and the longtime sales director, Leo Cusimano. Since then, things have gone steadily downhill. In my opinion, the new owners of the Voice are interested in nothing but profit. They don’t seem to care about the LGBT community or their employees, and they certainly don’t care about doing good journalism. They want an editor who will write puff pieces about their advertisers instead of reporting the facts, and I refused to be that editor.

For example, last week we reported on the new dress code at Dallas Pride. Organizers of the parade are among the Voice’s biggest advertisers, and they were not at all happy when this became a national story. They blamed me for it. I also raised objections about the cover of our Pride issue because I didn’t think it included enough minorities, and specifically African-Americans. In response, I was shouted down and told, “That’s not our market.”

These are just a few examples of what I have endured for the last several months. The new owners wanted to get rid of me, so they fabricated something out of thin air. Of course, they waited to do this until I had just closed on a house. This whole thing is a total outrage, and I’m still in shock over it. If you’re reading this, I hope that you will help me do something about it. The LGBT community needs to take back its Voice.

14 Photos of Skin at Dallas Gay Pride 2013, Despite ‘Dress Code’

(GayWebSource.com – Gay Media & Press Network) – Posted by

Unless you’re straight or didn’t log into Facebook last week, you know that there was a big controversy over a new “dress code” policy at this year’s Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade. In short, those in the parade were told not to show off an erection. That was about the extent of it, when all was said and done.

Still, gay rights activists complained that the Dallas Gay Pride Parade was going to be too toned-down. They worried the family-friendly atmosphere takes away from some LGBT people’s right to be “out and proud” and who they are.

For instance, I got this on Facebook:

Maybe the parade wasn’t as risque as it was in the past, but there was still a lot of eye-catching skin. These 13 photos prove it (oh, and sorry, no erections. Next year.):

Dallas Celebrates First Teen Gay Pride Festival

Haleigh Clark, 12, and Shawna Kirkham, 17, celebrated Dallas Gay Teen Pride with their lesbian mothers

DALLAS — Saturday afternoon, Antionett Thomas celebrated something that was two years in the making: the first teen-focused event during Dallas’ gay pride weekend. As a matter of fact, Thomas said it was the first teen gay pride in the country.

“We were attending prides in Atlanta and D.C. and New York and we noticed that there were no events that were, specifically catered fro the teens,” said Thomas, who co-organized the event with her wife.

The couple started Real Live Connections, an organization focused on educating, developing, and connecting LGBT teens. They plan to spread to other cities across the U.S., but It’s starting in Dallas because that’s where Thomas is from.

“I came out here when I was 14 years old. I know there was nothing for us to do. I know it’s one of those things that’s dear to me, being able to provide something for these kids,” said Thomas.
The festival included live music, speakers, games, and giveaways. Oh, and no booze, but there was a lot of Red Bull.

“An event like this gives them an opportunity to be proud if they have to be in the closet when they’re at home. For that one moment they can celebrate who they are as individuals, and then they don’t have to be paraded around the booze,” said Thomas.

Real Live Connections will also host a teen pride event next June in New York.

How You Can Help: Resource Center Food Pantry is ‘Critically Low’

(GayWebSource.com – Gay Media & Press Network) – Posted by

Late Friday afternoon, Resource Center Dallas sent out a news release, begging the community for help. It’s food pantry is “critically low.” Resource Center spokesman Rafael McDonnell told the Dallas Voice, the situation has gotten so dire, “We’re giving away Twizzlers because that’s all we’ve got.”

On average, Resource Center’s food pantry hands out seven tons of food to about 1900 HIV+ clients each week.

Donate CASH directly to the Resource Center….

You can donate cash online or in-person (2701 Reagan St). There’s no question, cash always goes the furthest. That way the center can buy exactly what it needs, and probably for cheaper than you can get it. Besides, you can write off a cash donation on your taxes.

Bring Donations to the Round-Up Saloon on Friday…

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence DFW have already organized a “Pack the Pantry” canned food drive. According to the Facebook Invite, “Please bring your nonperishable food items, gift cards (Kroger, Tom Thumb, Albertson’s or any you can provide). We will also accept cash as the Resource Center can make a dollar go much farther than a can of food. Let’s see if we can pack the pantry in 1 hour Friday night! Happy Pride!”

Keep your ears open for other opportunities

I’ve heard rumblings about other organizations that will be collecting this weekend. However, nothing else specifically confirmed.

If anyone else is organizing a drive, let me know.  I’d be happy to update this page!

Be careful who you give it to

Scammers will ALWAYS try to take advantage of situations like this. Don’t give cash to someone just because he says he’s collecting for the Resource Center. If you want to be certain, just donate directly. The need is there, but make sure your money goes to the right place before you give it away.

Dallas Gay Pride Participants: Better Cover Your Junk

Better have your shorts on in there, fellas

UPDATE:

After my original post, local activist Hardy Haberman reached out with concerns about the Tavern Guild’s stance that the policy is nothing new. He attended a pre-parade meeting for those who are going to be a part of Sunday’s parade at the Rose Room.

He claims the first thing organizers said at the meeting was “there are ging to be some things different about the parade this year. We’re going to make it more family-friendly.”

“It’s like they’re trying to assimilate and I have a real problem with assimilationists,” said Haberman.

Haberman has written a full editorial with concerns over the policy, which will be published in Friday’s Dallas Voice.

“This was the first year it was verbalized but the rules have always been in the parade application. They were written into the application based on city code and policy on public dress codes and behavior. This was done at the city’s request and have been a part of the parade rules for many years. This was the first year that we found it necessary to verbally remind the parade entrants,” said Michael Doughman, Executive Director of the Dallas Tavern Guild, in response to Haberman’s concerns.

ORIGINAL POST:

You can’t get naked in public in Texas. It’s against the law.

Sec. 21.08.  INDECENT EXPOSURE.  (a)  A person commits an offense if he exposes his anus or any part of his genitals with intent to arouse or gratify the sexual desire of any person, and he is reckless about whether another is present who will be offended or alarmed by his act.

The thing is, at Dallas’ gay pride, organizers have been slightly lax in recent years, and allowed people to “push the envelope.” Well, no more, according to Michael Doughman, executive director of the Dallas Tavern Guild. He says organizers and police will be patrolling the staging area at Sunday’s Alan Ross Freedom Parade. Anyone who isn’t properly clothed could be removed and/or blacklisted from next year’s pride.

It’s gotten a few local activists incensed. Daniel Cates posted this on Facebook:

“No bare asses, no breasts (even with pasties) no tight underwear on dancers, nothing too political at all. The “queer” is effectively being erased from our pride celebration in favor of the most polished, heteronormative representation of our community as possible.”

Cates continued by asking parade attendees to “DEFY the Tavern Guild,” and coined the hashtag #Prideoutwithyourhideout

Doughman denies that the policy is anything new. He says he had to issue a reminder of the rules because of risque attire worn by some parade participants in recent years. He’s asking that dancers on floats wear swimwear instead of underwear.

“It is in the rules for all parade participants,” said Doughman in an email Wednesday. “The ‘dress code’ as they are calling it is simply the city ordinances regarding nudity and lewdness in public. Nothing is new this year.”

Trail Life USA officially held its inaugural convention over the weekend in Nashville, TN.The group formed earlier this year when the Boy Scouts of America voted to allow gay members.

However, it won’t allow gay members. According to its membership standards:

In terms of sexual identification and behavior, we affirm that any sexual activity outside the context of the covenant of marriage between one man and one woman is sinful before God and therefore inconsistent with the values and principles of the program.
It also states that adult members “must subscribe to and abide by the statement of Christian faith and the Oath and Creed of the program (currently being finalized).”

Reporters were not allowed to attend the event, but CNN reports that at the convention the group unveiled its name and logo.

Since the new Boy Scouts of America policy allowing gay youth goes into effect January 2014, Trail Life USA officially launches January 2014.
