DFW Pride Movement Celebrates 5th Dallas Black Pride Oct. 3 – 7

(GayWebSource.com – Gay Media & Press Network) – Posted by

Dallas Black Pride 300x200 DFW Pride Movement Celebrates 5th Dallas Black Pride Oct. 3 7Dallas Black Pride has been around for 16 years, but DFW Pride Movement has only been here for the past five. It’s the “official non-profit host of Dallas Black Pride.”

The Movement Dallas Black Pride will put on its fifth annual Black Community Summit, it’s second annual career fair, and its first bowling night.

The non-profit came together as a way to build up Dallas’ African American community through social events and programs. The whole idea is to offer something different from the ‘circuit party’ scene.

I talked to the executive director of DFW Pride Movement, Derrick Spillman, as part of my “30 LGBT Leaders for 30 Years of Dallas Pride” series.

“[DFW Pride Movement’s] mission it to promote social awareness, unity, self-empowerment, mentor-ship, and positive visibility throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth LGBT community of color. We felt that was needed. It needed to be reflected in pride itself, outside of just the party. That’s where we came together to create things where we could jointly have representation throughout pride,” explained Spillman during that interview.

There will be a lot of that community-building over the weekend. Check out DFW Pride Movement‘s website for a full list of events. For instance, this sounds pretty titillating: “Fashion Meets Porn Delivery the 4-1-1 on the 9-1-1 Booty Call”

Well, hello!

Tarrant County Gay Pride Expands with LGBT Film Festival, QCinema

(GayWebSource.com – Gay Media & Press Network) – Posted by

tarrant county gay pride 300x199 Tarrant County Gay Pride Expands with LGBT Film Festival, QCinemaIn 2013, the Tarrant County Gay Pride Week Association (yep, that’s TCGPWA) celebrates its 32nd anniversary. Considering its long history, TCGPWA has a lot to celebrate. For anyone who’s curious, no, Tarrant County Pride is not the red-headed step child of Dallas gay pride. As a matter of fact, this year, Fort Worth’s LGBT celebration will officially span a total of ten days (Oct. 3-13).

The city of ‘Cowboys and Culture’ is a lot more accepting than a North Texas outsider might think. Just check out the Fort Worth Convention & Visitors Bureau’s Pride WORTHy page, catered specifically to LGBT visitors.

Pride [extra-long] week kicks off October 3, with a party at Club Reflection in Fort Worth.

On Saturday, October 5, the 2013 Tarrant County Pride Parade begins at noon, from Weatherford Street, and runs south down Houston. The Pride Street Festival at General Worth Square (Houston and 9th) runs until 6pm.

Sunday, October 5, the annual Pride Picnic runs from noon – 6p at the Arts Pavilion in Trinity Park. It’s described as the “largest GLBT family-friendly event held in Tarrant County.” This year we celebrate the 32nd anniversary of what was, reportedly, a parade started by “a drag queen who wanted a place for gays to congregate that wasn’t between the four walls of a bar.”

On Monday, the celebration continues with a panel on progress made since the Fort Worth Police and TABC raid of the Rainbow Lounge in 2009. “Diversity and Progress in the City of Fort Worth – Implementing Positive Change,” is from 5:30p to 7:30p at Celebration Community Church.

Thursday, one of North Texas’ most popular events, QCinema, kicks off its 15th anniversary. This is the film festival that presented the Southwest premieres of Trick, But I’m a Cheerleader, All Over the Guy, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and Adam and Steve (just to name a few.)

In other words, it’s a big deal.

On Thursday, October 10, QCinema offers the Southwest Premiere of Del Shores’ filmed version of his play Southern Baptist Sissies. For the rest of the weekend, there are plenty of films and special guests, including Shores.

See the full schedule on QCinema.org.

First Dallas Gay Pride? Expect This

(GayWebSource.com – Gay Media & Press Network) – Posted by

The first gay pride celebration I went to was more than a decade ago. It was St. Louis Gay Pride, and I had a really good time. I’m pretty sure the reason I enjoyed myself so much was that it was my first. I saw so much freedom and acceptance.

Over the years I’ve become less active in the gay community. However, that’s changed this year. I am—no kidding—going to attend my first Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade. I’m pretty excited about it.

So… rather than pretending I know what to expect, I decided to ask some of my Facebook friends for advice. Following is what they had to offer.

The Literal Explanations:

Dallas Gay Pride Participants: Better Cover Your Junk

(GayWebSource.com – Gay Media & Press Network) – Posted by

dallas pride 2011 300x199 Dallas Gay Pride Participants: Better Cover Your Junk

Better have your shorts on in there, fellas

UPDATE:

After my original post, local activist Hardy Haberman reached out with concerns about the Tavern Guild’s stance that the policy is nothing new. He attended a pre-parade meeting for those who are going to be a part of Sunday’s parade at the Rose Room.

He claims the first thing organizers said at the meeting was “there are ging to be some things different about the parade this year. We’re going to make it more family-friendly.”

“It’s like they’re trying to assimilate and I have a real problem with assimilationists,” said Haberman.

Haberman has written a full editorial with concerns over the policy, which will be published in Friday’s Dallas Voice.

“This was the first year it was verbalized but the rules have always been in the parade application. They were written into the application based on city code and policy on public dress codes and behavior. This was done at the city’s request and have been a part of the parade rules for many years. This was the first year that we found it necessary to verbally remind the parade entrants,” said Michael Doughman, Executive Director of the Dallas Tavern Guild, in response to Haberman’s concerns.

ORIGINAL POST:

You can’t get naked in public in Texas. It’s against the law.

Sec. 21.08.  INDECENT EXPOSURE.  (a)  A person commits an offense if he exposes his anus or any part of his genitals with intent to arouse or gratify the sexual desire of any person, and he is reckless about whether another is present who will be offended or alarmed by his act.

The thing is, at Dallas’ gay pride, organizers have been slightly lax in recent years, and allowed people to “push the envelope.” Well, no more, according to Michael Doughman, executive director of the Dallas Tavern Guild. He says organizers and police will be patrolling the staging area at Sunday’s Alan Ross Freedom Parade. Anyone who isn’t properly clothed could be removed and/or blacklisted from next year’s pride.

It’s gotten a few local activists incensed. Daniel Cates posted this on Facebook:

“No bare asses, no breasts (even with pasties) no tight underwear on dancers, nothing too political at all. The “queer” is effectively being erased from our pride celebration in favor of the most polished, heteronormative representation of our community as possible.”

Cates continued by asking parade attendees to “DEFY the Tavern Guild,” and coined the hashtag #Prideoutwithyourhideout

Doughman denies that the policy is anything new. He says he had to issue a reminder of the rules because of risque attire worn by some parade participants in recent years. He’s asking that dancers on floats wear swimwear instead of underwear.

“It is in the rules for all parade participants,” said Doughman in an email Wednesday. “The ‘dress code’ as they are calling it is simply the city ordinances regarding nudity and lewdness in public. Nothing is new this year.”

“Evita” & “The Little Mermaid” Among Dallas Summer Musicals’ 2013-2014 Season

(GayWebSource.com – Gay Media & Press Network) – Posted by

little mermaid press photo 150x150 Evita & The Little Mermaid Among Dallas Summer Musicals 2013 2014 SeasonGet excited! Tuesday, Dallas Summer Musicals announced its 2013-2014 season. Once again, it looks like a great season. It includes some new versions of classics, like Andrew Lloyd Weber/Tim Rice’s The Wizard of Oz. It also has a few shows that have never been to North Texas, like Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

…And, it has an awful lot of gay. Sure, there’s no Priscilla, Queen of the Desert in this season, but there’s still a lot to keep you entertained.

Here’s the full season:

December 17-29: Irving Berlin’s White Christmas
