Function:
Under the supervision of the LGBT HealthLink Administrator, the Social Media & Project Specialist will focus on social media implementation and assist with projects designed to enhance the uptake of tobacco & cancer & wellness best practices by LGBT community organizations and public health entities, as well as provide administrative support to LGBT HealthLink.

Representative Duties:

  • Responsible for the ongoing management and growth of LGBT HealthLink’s social media presence in alignment with business strategies and direction.
    • Collaborate with staff to develop marketing and communications plans that leverage the social media space.
    • Responsible for developing content across owned and earned social channels. This could include blog posts, tweets, status updates, pins, photos and videos.
    • Creates, manages and grows business presence across social media channels, including, but not limited to blogs, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, YouTube and Instagram.
    • Leverages measurement tools to provide progress reports and mine insights, while continually finding ways to improve on those metrics through testing and new initiatives
  • Assists in the implementation of action plan support systems as specified by protocol objectives
    • Assists in maintaining the quality of all written and computerized LGBT HealthLink correspondence.
    • Maintains complete and current contact information on all LGBT HealthLink participants
    • Generates and disseminates routine communication pieces as assigned.
    • Maintains training to manage LGBT HealthLink data in designated electronic formats, is responsible for entering, verifying and managing those data accordingly.
    • Maintain multiple social media accounts based on Social Media best practices
  • Utilizes written and verbal communication to contribute to the effective functioning of LGBT HealthLink
    • Maintains current knowledge of tobacco research by reading medical journals, articles and other related publications, attending conferences, seminars, forums, trainings and other available presentations
  • Provide administrative support to the LGBT HealthLink
    • Assist in the coordination and hosting of meetings
    • Responds to or refers all frontline phone or email communications about LGBT HealthLink to the appropriate staff.
    • File, fax and photocopy materials
    • Assist with online research as needed
    • Assist in maintaining an inventory and ordering supplies
    • Assist in preparing individual and bulk mailings in support of LGBT HealthLink’s activities
    • Prepare and disseminate minutes of various meetings
    • Perform data entry and database maintenance

Education:
Bachelor’s degree is preferred.

Minimum of high school graduate or equivalent required.

Experience/Other Requirements:

  • Two years of office experience required
  • Ability to use effective communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Working knowledge and real-world experience in planning, managing and executing social media initiatives
  • Real-word experience planning social media programs that span owned (eg Blogs), earned (eg Facebook) and paid (sponsored tweets)
  • Database management, MS Office and web design experience highly desirable.
  • Ability to work well in a small team setting, handle multiple tasks, prioritize assigned duties, and work independently is essential.
  • Strong organizational skills required
  • Strong interest in wellness/fighting cancer & Big Tobacco and LGBT health equity/ public health highly preferred
  • Ability to work harmoniously with diverse groups of individuals (both in an office, as well as remotely)
  • Experience building work relationships long distance is strongly preferred (The LGBT HealthLink team works remotely)
  • Experience working across ethnically and racially diverse communities required; demonstrated successes in cross-cultural collaborations preferred.
  • Must have working knowledge of social media platforms, demonstrated history with building social media presence preferred.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Expert knowledge of the interaction between commonly used HIV/AIDS medications and psychiatric medications
  • Excellent written and oral communication
  • Ability to give accurate DSM diagnosis
  • Ability to effectively use psychiatric medications to treat a range of diagnoses/symptoms
  • Familiarity with HIV/AIDS issues
  • Familiarity with LGBT issues

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

The Fenway Institute operates the nation’s first community-based HIV research program, which has been conducting long-term epidemiological research since 1985.  Fenway is one of eight sites in the US that was selected by the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases to recruit participants for the first clinical trials of an HIV vaccine.  In 2007, The Fenway Institute was awarded a federal population center grant from the National Institutes of Health, representing the first time a community-based organization has been selected for this type of work.  Working with the American College of Physicians, they also published the nation’s first medical textbook focused on LGBT people The Fenway Guide to LGBT Health. In 2013, the LGBT Aging Project became a program of The Fenway Institute.

Fenway Health is affiliated with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. All physicians hold faculty appointments at Harvard Medical School. Research affiliations include Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Brown University Medical School.

  • Produce and coordinate dissemination of original reports, briefs, columns, articles, and other materials related to LGBT economic opportunity and racial justice.
  • Help plan public events and other activities to promote American Progress’ work on LGBT economic justice and other related issues.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in economics, public policy, sociology, or social science preferred.
  • At least 5 years professional experience.

  • Knowledge of LGBT and related policy issues, particularly economic opportunity and racial justice.
  • Experience in the LGBT advocacy movement is a plus.
  • Excellent writing, research, and verbal communication skills, with a significant body of written work.

2015 Summer Legal Internship LGBT Rights

The Southern Poverty Law Center offers summer internships to exceptional second-year law students who possess strong academic backgrounds, excellent research and writing skills, and a commitment to public interest law. The Center is a national non-profit organization dedicated to reducing bigotry and oppression through education and litigation. This internship is located in our Montgomery office.

The LGBT Rights Project litigates some of the most compelling cases in the country. We currently represent victims of fraudulent “conversion therapy” practices in New Jersey, a child born with an intersex condition and required to undergo needless sex-reassignment surgery by the State of South Carolina, a lesbian high-school student standing up to small-town school administrators who told her they don’t want a “dyke” in their school, and a widower seeking to overturn Alabama’s refusal to recognize his marriage to his late husband. Our focus is on the Deep South and on the most vulnerable LGBT populations.

This is a paid internship. Start dates are somewhat flexible, but interns usually begin sometime in early June 2015. A minimum commitment of ten weeks is expected.

LeGaL was one of the nation’s first bar associations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) legal community and remains one of the largest and most active organizations of its kind in the country.

LeGaL began as a social organization.  In May 1978, ten people met in Professor Art Leonard’s living room and formed the New York Law Group, which met on a monthly basis for informal social gatherings. Art began publishing a newsletter, the “Law Group Notes,” reporting on lesbian and gay community events and legal developments. The group grew and in 1984 incorporated as the Bar Association for Human Rights. In September 1991, the name was changed to the Lesbian and Gay Law Association of Greater New York. Over the years our name has changed to better reflect the diversity of our mission, of our membership and of the communities we seek to serve.

In 1994, the LeGaL Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization, was formed with Erica Bell as its founding President.  Through the Foundation, the organization publishes Lesbian/Gay Law Notes, the most comprehensive monthly publication summarizing legal developments affecting the LGBT community here and abroad, conducts a weekly walk-in pro bono clinic at Manhattan’s LGBT Community Center serving hundreds of individuals each year, a monthly clinic on Long Island, twice monthly clinics in Brooklyn and the Bronx, a collaborative Life Planning Clinic with NYLAG’s LGBT Law Project, sponsors the Dr. M.L. Hank Henry, Jr. Fund for Judicial Fellowships and, among its many other activities, runs the area’s only career fair dedicated to first-year LGBT law students.

  • Identifying and securing appropriate local and national aging, LGBT, Social Security, and legal experts to participate Town Hall panels
  • Working in conjunction with a local media consultant, utilize local media to promote and generate participation in Town Hall and Leadership events
  • Create a advocacy toolkit (event flyers, partner responsibilities, etc.) and various other materials to be disseminated prior to and at events
  • Reach out to local, state, and national government officials to attend Leadership events or Town Hall meets
  • Coordinate logistics (such as catering and venues) for all events, approximately a dozen and a half over the course of 9 months, including two webinars
  • Create a post-event packet for each location, documenting outcomes achieved

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of working in grassroots community organizing and/or special events planning
  • Access to transportation a must; position requires extensive travel around the state
  • Must have networks among California’s diverse populations
  • Must have good interpersonal skills
  • Strong ability to work well under pressure and strictly adhere to deadlines
  • Good written and oral communication skills, multilingual abilities a huge plus, particularly in Spanish
  • Previous relationship with LGBT community a plus, but not essential
  • Technologically proficient in web and basic computer programs
