The History of Models of Pride

Models of Pride was created in 1993 by the Gay and Lesbian Education Commission of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) as a means of providing a safe and positive environment where LGBTQ youth could network with each other and expose themselves to new ideas and information. Friends of Project 10, Inc. took over the sponsorship and major funding for this conference in 1998 when the LAUSD abolished all education commissions. For 20 years, the conference programming has included a wide variety of workshops covering such topics as dating, coming out, stereotyping, student activism, cultural and religious issues, healthcare issues, creative expression, and much more. In 2010, Friends of Project 10 Inc. invited LifeWorks, the LGBT youth mentoring and development program of the Los Angeles LGBT Center to take over as presenter of the conference.

After a successful transition in 2010, LifeWorks has grown Models of Pride from less than 500 youth in attendance to over 1000.  LifeWorks proudly continues the Models of Pride tradition that for so many years has been a life changing experience for thousands of youth.  And, as times change for the better, Models of Pride continues to adjust to meet the ever-changing needs of LGBT youth.

Hosts of Halloween 2017

The mission of the Hosts of Halloween is to provide funding for Project Lazarus, a home in New Orleans for men and women with AIDS, so that they may provide healthcare and support services for their residents. Project Lazarus, which provides direct AIDS services, is the sole beneficiary of all funds which are raised.

In our 31 year history, we have raised almost $4.5M for Project Lazarus. We are one of the only 100% donation/volunteer event weekends left in the US.

The story of Halloween’s in New Orleans is a story of the New Orleans gay community – a community coming together to share their love and sense of family, a community celebrating its unique culture and love of showmanship, a community coming to the aid of its own in the dark days of the AIDS crisis, and a community triumphing over challenges with a resilient, joyful spirit.

If you’re a big kid, and you like to dress up for Halloween, there is no other place to be than New Orleans!

Connecting Queer Communities

Often, we have ideas rattling around in our brains. It’s the thing they always resurface in quiet moments.  It’s the “I should…” thing that nags you. As a business owner, I am always looking for ways to grow my business. Smart ways to grow my business, not “Build a million followers in a week” kind of stuff, but serious strategies and best practices to build a true business network.

Connecting Queer Communities

I’ve been doing this Marketing thing for close to 15 years, and here is what I’ve learned so far.

  • Most local B2B business happens via word of mouth. As a rule, accountants do get business because they tweet, but because one of their customers was happy with their services and referred them to a business colleague.
  • Social media, websites help reinforce the brand to those who already know the provider.
  • The best networking happens face to face one on one.
  • Networking is work, and most of us would rather dream of Facebook followers than actually go meet real people and make small talk.

OK, so another online network is counterintuitive to all those points.

Well, yes and no. Sometimes, we all need a place to meet like minded folks. A place to share. A place to get started. Our goal is to address the challenges of Queer business networking online to help you in our the real world.  A safe place to share what worked, commiserate over what didn’t and to be inspired to get up and do it again.

This isn’t just our journey. Our job isn’t to tell you to do this, don’t do that.  Our job is to create a place where you can share your challenges and get various feedback from different perspectives.

Will you join us? Q – The Network

Wonder how to grow a network? Follow the behind the scenes story – The Journey

International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

In at least 76 countries around the world today, same-sex relationships are illegal, at times involving lifetime imprisonment. In 10 countries the death penalty is possible for same-sex acts.

In almost all countries, freedom for people to live out and to express their true gender identities – and to have them rightfully recognized by the state – is harshly limited by transphobic laws and attitudes.

International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

But even in progressive countries, violence and discrimination against LGBT people still exist in the form of discriminatory laws, unjust representations in the media, unfair treatment by employers, negative social attitudes, and even in everyday interactions with people we care about, and who care about us.Homophobia and transphobia target all people who don’t conform to majority sexual and gender roles, and they affect the lives of everyone – to express themselves and their opinions freely, and to have the rights of their, friends, family members, and loved one’s recognized. The International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia was created in 2004 to draw the attention of policymakers, opinion leaders, social movements, the media, and the public in general to these issues, and to promote a world of tolerance, respect, and freedom regardless of people’s sexual orientations or gender identities. As much as May 17 is a day against violence and oppression, it is also a day to promote freedom, diversity, and acceptance.

The date of May 17 was chosen to commemorate the decision taken by the World Health organization in 1990 to take homosexuality out of the list of mental disorders.

The International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia is now commemorated in approximately 120 countries around the world!

The situation remains overall very bad……

  • These 72 countries represent 37% of UN member states.
  • In relation to death penalty Sudan, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Yemen actually implement it. In addition, the death penalty is implemented provincially in 12 northern states in Nigeria and the southern parts of Somalia. In Mauretania, Afghanistan, Pakistan, UAE and Qatar it is on the statute, but is not known to be implemented. In ISIS/ISIL/Dash control areas of Iraq and Syria the death sentence for same-sex sexual behaviours is implemented by local non-State actors.  Source ILGA
  • In 2013, 5 billion people that is 70% of the world population live under laws and regulations that limit freedom of expression around sexual orientation and gender identity. This does NOT include the 8 US states which still have laws on the books that ban schools from teaching anything positive about homosexuality (Source: GLSEN.org). • 23 out of 46 Asian countries criminalise same-sex behavior. Source ILGA
  • 2,343 reported killings of trans* and gender-diverse were documented by Trans Murder Monitoring in 69 countries worldwide between the 1st of January 2008 and the 31st of December 2016, 1,834 of which were reported in Central and South America. • In Europe 41 countries recognise a trans person’s gender identity, with only 4 countries which have such provisions basing their procedures on self-determination. 23 European Countries require a proof of sterilization in gender identity recognition. Source Transgender Europe
