Shanghai Pride 2015

China’s longest-running reoccurring LGBTQ event ShanghaiPRIDE will kick off on the Saturday morning of June 13th 2015. For the third consecutive year, the week-long festival will be opened by a 6km city run passing through Shanghai’s various iconic sights, after which the crowd will be invited to celebrate diversity with a lunchtime BBQ at The Langham, Shanghai, Xintiandi, relaxing 5th level terrace lounge, XTD elevated. The venue’s encompassing view on the city’s popular Xintiandi district will be accompanied by a number of colorful performances.

This year, all donations made by run participants are designated to Qing’ai, Shanghai’s community center for young men and women living with HIV. Wendy Lo, one of the organizers of the event, says, “Pride Run is our way of promoting a healthy lifestyle while bringing the community together. Regardless of old or young, queer or straight, female or male – we welcome everyone to celebrate in the spirit of diversity.”

The first ShanghaiPRIDE came into being with a bang in 2009, thanks to the tireless commitment of a small group of volunteers. Their hope was, and still remains, that ShanghaiPRIDE can raise the awareness and visibility of the LGBT community in China and thereby increase acceptance and tolerance.

ShanghaiPRIDE is a diverse and colorful celebration of all that’s great about being gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered. In a country where only a tiny slice of the estimated 50 million LGBT people are out to themselves and others, ShanghaiPRIDE is a poignant reminder that a lot of progress still needs to be made in Chinese society to help people feel comfortable with the way they were born.
