Time Out Youth is a youth center for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth and their allies, ages 11-20, in Charlotte and the surrounding areas.

Director of School Outreach and GSA Support

Time Out Youth is a place where you can experience a sense of belonging and community.  Whether you are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, a straight ally – or just don’t want to be labeled, you will be welcomed here.  Some of our youth are out, some are partially out, and some are not out at all.  Time Out Youth offers a safe space for all and fully respects the journey of each individual.  While at Time Out Youth, you are not expected to be anyone or anything except who you are.Director of School Outreach and GSA Support

SCOPE OF WORK:

The Director of School Outreach and GSA support is a full-time, exempt position responsible for the planning and implementation of all School outreach services of Time Out Youth. The position reports to the Executive Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate School Outreach and GSA support through Time Out Youth.
  • Develop and maintain expertise on school system policies, procedures and practices relative to GSAs, student clubs, bullying policy and other issues affecting LGBTQ and ally students.
  • Develop and maintain expertise on legal aspects of student issues at the local, state and federal levels (legislative and judicial) that may impact LGBTQ and ally students.
  • Develop a project plan for implementing and marketing Time Out Youth services in school settings.
  • Establish and maintain credibility and rapport with school personnel (administration, GSA advisors, arts faculty).
  • Work with faculty and students to plan and execute GSA meetings.
  • Provide Safe Zone training in school settings.
  • Assist with evening groups, drop-in hours and individual supportive counseling for youth and parents at Time Out Youth.
  • Develop, maintain, and support the GSA Advisory Council and Educational Advisory Board.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise interns who support school advocacy days and GSA social events and activities.
  • Manage the program budget and grants objectives in conjunction with the Executive Director.
  • Assist with grant writing and reporting.
  • Track and maintain accurate participant records, statistics, and reports.
  • Assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree preferred in Education, Counseling or Social Work.
  • Two year’s experience working with diverse youth in a non-profit setting or school setting.
  • Experience with program planning and evaluation.
  • Deep understanding and knowledge of LGBTQ youth issues.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Energetic self-starter, active problem solver, and team player.
  • Strong ethical values and commitment to confidentiality.

DESIRED SKILLS:

 

  • Master of Social Work or background in education.
  • Experience working with GSAs as a youth leader or faculty advisor

Compensation:
Base Salary $24,000
Insurance stipend $1,200 per year
30 hours per week, evening and weekend hours
