West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio places travel ban on city-funded trips to Mississippi

(GayWebSource.com – West Palm Beach, Florida) — In the wake of Mississippi’s enactment of HB 1523, West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio became the first mayor in Florida — and the second in the nation after Seattle Mayor Ed Murray — to place a travel ban on city-funded trips to Mississippi.

HB 1523, which was signed into law yesterday by Mississippi’s Republican Governor, Phil Bryant, allows people with religious objections to deny services to lesbian and gays and permits employers to use religious beliefs as justification in determining workplace policies.

“For more than two decades, West Palm Beach has been in the forefront, protecting the civil rights and ensuring equality for the LGBT community,” said Muoio. “Until the discriminatory laws in Mississippi and North Carolina are repealed, West Palm Beach taxpayers will not subsidize legally-sanctioned discrimination against LGBT people.”

On March 28, Muoio became the second mayor in the nation — after San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee – to impose a similar ban on travel to North Carolina following the enactment of another comprehensive anti-LGBT law in that state.

Mayor Muoio implemented the two travel bans at the request of the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council (PBCHRC), a local civil rights organization dedicated to ending discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.  Since 1990, PBCHRC has been responsible for the enactment of more than 100 local laws and policies which prohibit discrimination against the LGBT community.

“Once again, Mayor Muoio has taken steps to ensure that taxpayers dollars will not be spent in places that discriminate against LGBT Americans,” said retired judge Rand Hoch, PBCHRC President and Founder.  “We commend Mayor Muoio for putting her strong beliefs against bigotry into action by prohibiting taxpayer dollars being used in both Mississippi and North Carolina.”

Last year, Muoio was one of a handful of mayors who announced a similar travel ban to the state of Indiana, following the

wake of Indiana’s passage of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act,

As the result of pressure placed on Indiana by civic leaders, businesses, and numerous other entities, the Indiana Legislature promptly amended the Religious Freedom Restoration Act,by specifying that the law could not be used as a legal defense to discriminate against patrons based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Following Muoio’s announcement this morning, travel bans to Mississippi have been implemented by the governors of Minnesota, New York, Vermont and Washington as well as the mayors of.San Francisco and Seattle

Boating Vacations and Destinations

Canal basin at DunhampsteadTired of beach vacations, but still love to spend time by the water? A boating vacation might be the perfect way to up the ante. Instead of spending long lazy days on the beach, choose long lazy days on a chartered yacht or cruise ship, or go for an active vacation that includes diving and other activities. On the ocean or inland on rivers and lakes, there are lots of great LGBT-friendly destinations all over the world.

Sail the Greek Islands

The Greek Islands harbor some of the world’s most gorgeous scenery, and along with its deep turquoise water and wide blue sky, is definitely high on the list of the world’s most beautiful oceanic regions. LGBT tourism has really taken off in Greece in recent years, and there are now lots of queer-friendly places to visit. Mykonos remains a highly popular gaycation destination, but other islands such as Paros and Santorini are up-and-coming vacation favorites too. There’s now a pretty wide range of charter companies in the Greek Islands that fly the rainbow flag (figuratively if not literally), making this a great spot for a gaycation. Novices can choose the chartered option that includes a crew and an experienced skipper, but many companies offer the chance for passengers to get involved with sailing if they wish. It’s a great way to enjoy all the advantages of a private yacht without any of the hassle and additional expense of ownership. Not to mention, one of the most enjoyable ways there is to get a great tan!

Boating on England’s Canals

The English countryside is criss-crossed with a network of canals, constructed during the industrial revolution to tote goods from town to town. These days there’s not much call for transporting goods this way, but the canals are still in use for recreational purposes—one of which is traveling via boat for day trips and longer journeys. It’s the perfect DIY gaycation for independent travelers who want to try something a bit different, and while it’s not a fast method of travel, it’s a fun opportunity to see a little piece of England in an entirely new way. England’s network of canals is pretty extensive, so it’s a good idea to use a canal guide when you’re mapping out your itinerary. It’ll not only help you decide where to go, but also what to see and do in the towns and villages you travel through.

August in Amsterdam

Amsterdam has long been known as an LGBT-friendly city, and with its exhaustive list of attractions and sights, and clubs, cafes, and bars, it’s an amazing place to visit in its own right. It’s also host to a number of annual events, one of which is Sail Amsterdam, a celebration of the city’s rich maritime history and heritage. Sail Amsterdam is the world’s biggest public event, during which hundreds of ships—including stately tall ships as well as naval vessels and smaller craft—sail through the city’s harbor and into the North Sea Canal, eventually mooring at locations all over the city. It’s an incredible event, packed with cultural events and activities, but it’s one that’s not easy to catch. Sail Amsterdam takes place over a few days towards the end of August, and only happens every five years: if you miss the 2015 event, it won’t come around again until 2020.

Travel the Norwegian Coastline

Norway’s coastline is nothing short of stunning, and there’s no better way to see it than a week or two on one of the Hurtigruten line’s cruise ships. The vessels do double duty, carrying not only cruise passengers but also ferrying cargo and local travelers between adjacent port cities. As such, the ships make frequent stops along the coast, giving passengers plenty of opportunity to explore. It should be noted, however, that Hurtigruten ships don’t bear much resemblance to your average cruise liner. Each ship has a bar or two and typically has a great menu full of fresh local food, but there’s little in the way of onboard amenities and entertainment, as the real star of the show is the incredible scenery, and the cruise experience itself. However, for budget-conscious travelers looking for a quiet vacation option, this is a good one to add to the list of possibles.

Arosa Gay Skiweek

Welcome to Europe’s favorite Gay & Lesbian Ski Week in the Swiss Alps!

The idyllic and gay-friendly Swiss resort of Arosa invites you from January 11th to 18th, 2015 to its fun-filled LGBT ski week. Since 2005, this lively and colorful week has become one of the biggest LGBT winter events in Europe. Watch on YouTube our new video, presenting the week:

Our new concept, introduced in 2012, proved a resounding success:  all events took place at different locations throughout Arosa: in the new Kursaal, in the Waterworld at Hotel Altein, at the town Ice Rink and in various ski huts, restaurants and hotel lounges.  This year, for the first time, the „White” closing party will take place at top of the Weisshorn mountain!  The newly linked skiing domain of Arosa-Lenzerheide with its 225km/140miles of slopes, fantastic snow conditions, lots of sunny days, and more than 500 participants from over 30 different countries all justify calling it Europe’s favorite Winter Pride Festival!

Our many years of experience and excellent feedback from participants are reflected in the program: A welcome cocktail party with Sherry Vine & Arroba, friendship dinners (for anyone who hasn’t already hooked up with somebody at the welcome party), daily Après-Ski with DJs, and late bar nights out.  So many possibilities – so little time!  Fortunately on holiday you can turn night into day without feeling guilty, or you might miss the classic concert in the village church with Michel DalbertMichail Lifits and Max Simon, the fondue fun at the Tschuggenhütte with night-time sledging or the „Splash Pool Party“. Highlights this year will include the worldwide infamous „Downhill Costume Race“, and an impressive farewell party at the world’s highest White Party, on top of the Weisshorn at 2’653m / 8’704ft!

Arosa Gay Ski Week Man

Ski bums and snowboarders can discover the vast ski area in groups with our team of sporty guides or take some lessons with one of the experienced teacher of the ABC Snow Sport School. Just the breathtakingly beautiful winter landscape in Arosa should be enough to convince the most resigned couch potato to chance one downhill run. Experienced skiers and snowboarders will not be bored: in addition to the challenging slopes of Arosa-Lenzerheide, they can even book a ski trip to St. Moritz by helicopter!  But non-skiers are not left out: in addition to extensive walking and hiking trails, the Tschugenhütte midday rendezvous can also be reached easily and pleasantly on foot!

An extended day in the mountains (don’t forget the sun cream!) can be quite exhausting. There are three good reasons to book a room at one of our eleven gay friendly participating hotels: they offer special packages where you get the Event Pass at a special rate, they are fully prepared to accommodate our gay and lesbian guests attending the festival, Event Pass holders get free entry to all parties, Apres-Skis and concerts, as well as free sun-loungers at the Tschuggenhütte during the week, plus a 10% discount for the ski pass and 20% discount on ski hire at the Bananas Ski- and Snowboard center.

Travel – how do I get to Arosa?

Arosa is at the end of the Schanfigg Valley, in Canton Graubünden, in Eastern Switzerland, between Davos and St. Moritz.
