President Obama Announces Executive Order Banning Workplace Discrimination Based on Gender Identity for Federal Employees

Tonight at the White House LGBT Pride Reception, President Obama announced he would be issuing an executive order to protect transgender federal employees from workplace discrimination.  Once issued, it would expand upon an executive order from President Bill Clinton, which banned workplace discrimination among federal employees on the basis of sexual orientation.  The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization, called for such an executive order in its Blueprint for Positive Change when President Obama first took office.

Following President Obama’s announcement, Human Rights Campaign (HRC) president Chad Griffin issued the following statement:

“Today President Obama proved yet again why he will be remembered as the most pro-LGBT president in history.  Each and every American worker should be judged based on the work they do, and never because of a fundamental aspect of who they are – like their gender identity. And the federal government, like employers across America, is best served by ensuring every qualified individual are able to serve without fear of discrimination.  We thank President Obama for announcing this crucial and historic measure, and we look forward to seeing it signed soon.”

Currently, there’s no federal law that explicitly bans workplace discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. And 32 states lack explicit laws banning discrimination based on gender identity, while it’s legal under state law to fire or refuse employment to a person based on sexual orientation in 29 states.

For 12 years, HRC’s Corporate Equality Index has set key standards for equality in America’s workplaces.  Corporations of all sizes, regions and industries have risen to the challenge and adopted policies and practices that treat LGBT workers fairly and equally.  According to HRC’s research, 91 percent of Fortune 500 companies include sexual orientation in their workplace policies and 61 percent include gender identity. Also, nearly 450 major companies require their suppliers to adhere to their own LGBT-inclusive workplace policies, including more than half of the 100 largest corporations in America.  These companies span 37 distinct industries and employ 13.7 million people.

Earlier this month, HRC released new public opinion research that conclusively demonstrates strong public support for federal non-discrimination workplace protections for LGBT workers. A national survey of 1,200 registered voters conducted June 6-10, 2014 by TargetPoint Consulting found that 63 percent of those surveyed favor a federal law that protects gay and transgender people from employment discrimination while only 25 percent oppose it.  Enthusiasm for this is especially strong among supporters: 42 percent strongly favor it, while only 16 percent strongly oppose.

UK Big Brother 2014 Day 25 Update

Big Brother Day 25 Update

by Newsdesk | 30th June 2014

Channel 5

• As the house is living under the rule of ‘Girl Power’, Big Brother enlists Jale and Helen as drill sergeants to run a boot camp in the garden for the boys.

• As the boys are put through their paces, Ashleigh observes from the sidelines commenting that “Marlon’s a fu*king d*ck” and Winston looks like “a big fu*king monkey”. Danielle tells Kimberly that she “can’t stand all that macho crap”

• Danielle and Ashleigh observe the Housemates from the Pod. As Helen walks by, Danielle remarks, “her bum’s always hanging out” and Ashleigh responds, “I don’t even look in that direction anymore…I’ve seen her bum more than I’ve seen my own” They go on to discuss who they want to save from nomination and Ashleigh comments, “We need to make sure that Chris and Christopher are safe and put an ar*ehole up with them…”

• Matthew tells Big Brother that he doesn’t feel happy saying, “My mood’s got lower and lower…I’m out of my comfort zone…I don’t really like most of the people in this House…I don’t really like the cliques and the dynamic…” He goes on to say that Marlon “should be embarrassed” by his behaviour and notes that the girls are scared of Helen adding, “That’s why Kim and Jale are friends with her. Not because they have genuine relationships with her…or genuine common interests…they’re afraid of her”

• Christopher and Matthew discuss Jale’s friendship with Helen. Christopher remarks, “I’m more than happy for her to make new friends as long as she doesn’t forget who her mates are, who had her back from day one”. Matthew admits that he doesn’t like “disgusting and vile” Helen. He thinks Helen is “playing a game” because she knows she’s hated and Christopher agrees that she thinks she’s “untouchable”

• Kimberly, Helen and Jale discuss Danielle and Ashleigh. Jale notes that “people don’t want to make an effort with anyone anymore…and when I say people, two girls don’t want to make an effort with anyone anymore”. Helen says they’re “making our decision very easy. If people don’t have respect for me when we’re trying to come together as a five, I’ll just stampede over their opinion. I think the two are the rudest fu*king people in this House and I don’t like rude people!”

• For the next part of the task, the girls become ladies who lunch, while the boys act as their servants. The girls have been fitted with secret earpieces and can hear everything the boys say in the kitchen

• Following lunch, Big Brother reveals that the girls were wearing earpieces and the Housemates discuss what the girls overheard

• Danielle cries to Big Brother over the name of her Bloody Mary cocktail saying, “It’s got degrading connotations…you just picked out the name Mary? What are the chances of that?! Why have I got the one that insinuates something about religion? I’ve never heard of it before so I thought they made it up…have you ever tasted warm tomato juice? It’s disgusting!”

• Chris tells Big Brother that “every conversation is dominated by conspiracy” in the House and speculates that the girls will save the “safe” Housemates. He goes on to say that Steven “only talks in questions” and never listens to answers and his “cringe worthy” relationship with Kimberly is “like if you bought a really expensive clock, only to discover it doesn’t tell you the time it only asks you the time. Pointless.”

Ash and Winston Strip Tease For the Girls | Channel 5

• For one night only, Winston, Ash and Marlon perform a strip tease for the girls. In the excitement, Jale falls off her seat

• Helen asks Marlon is he “was a bit hard” during the striptease. Marlon reassures her that it was just his microphone

• Danielle reveals to Ashleigh that she doesn’t trust Kimberly

• Steven speaks to Matthew in the kitchen telling him that Helen would “never say something in the Diary Room that she wouldn’t say to your face” Matthew observes that “she’s started to learn that closing her mouth will get her further”

• Mark tells Big Brother that “I can’t be arsed listening to anybody…everything is doing my head in”

• Helen talks to some of the Housemates about being excluded by Jale and Kimberly saying, “If they fu*king say something different to what I assumed tomorrow I’m going to go f*cking mental… I’ve been pushed out of this all the time they’re not interested in what I have to say...I can’t deal with this place I’m going to explode I’m actually going to f*cking explode, I can’t wait to get out.”

• Steven teaches Kimberly how to hug when Helen walks past and says, “You need to teach Kimberly how to keep me involved!” Later, in the garden, Steven tells Kimberly that he “will be fu*king fuming if I’m up for nomination tomorrow”

• Helen tells Kimberly that she thinks that decisions are taking place behind her back

• The girls discuss nominations in the bedroom and weigh up who would leave the House first out of Steven and Ash. In the living room, Ash comments, “After last Friday, I’m public enemy number one”

MARCUS COLLINS: UK Tour Announced

Marcus Collins, who proved he had serious star quality and a soulful set of pipes, the very first time he stepped on the X Factor audition stage, is set to embark on his first solo tour of the UK. Fresh from the success of a Top 10 debut album, the ‘scouse’ sensation’ will embark on a 14 date UK tour from 12 September – 16 October.

by Newsdesk | 30th June 2014

One of only three X Factor contestants to collaborate with their mentor after the show, Marcus has been working with and supported by Take That legend and former X Factor judge Gary Barlow ever since; ensuring Marcus is one of the hottest new talents the UK has to offer.

Before his eagerly-awaited second album drops, Liverpool’s finest will embark on his solo tour with a band of top quality musicians. Expect show-stopping Motown and Motown-inspired classics, the latest pop hits given a soulful spin and also some brand new songs, all performed with breathtaking energy in Marcus’s inimitable style.

Audiences will be treated to some eardrum-tingling surprises, as the silky voiced wonder delivers both vibrant, passionate boundary-pushing performances intermingled with more stripped down, laid back grooves. From a deliciously different spin on old school favourites by artists such as Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Anita Baker and Luther Vandross right through to Marcus’ take on modern classics from The White Stripes and Sam Smith, there’s something for all tastes. All performed with eye-popping showmanship and a mega-talented group of live musicians.

“To me, Motown is the epitome of what music is all about. A lot of the music we listen to today owes its roots to the Motown era. The passion, the hooks, the melodies, the backing vocals, the styling; to me, Motown is second to none. This new show is about celebrating those artists who were inspired by that era and putting my twist on those classic songs.”

Marcus has also been busy writing and working on new tracks in the studio, including his latest single Sweet Thang with fresh production talent Kamarua. Check out the new track here.

Since his success on the X Factor, Marcus’ talents have not just been restricted to the pop arena - he received rave reviews for his turn as Seaweed Stubbs in the UK tour of smash hit musical Hairspray in 2013. He is also busy preparing for his second album release.

RIP Frank M Robinson, Author And Harvey Milk Speechwriter Dies, 87

Frank M Robinson, who was a renowned science fiction and thriller writer has died at the age of 87 today.

by Newsdesk | 30th June 2014

Dustin Lance Black Instagram

Born in 1926, Frank M. Robinson moved to San Franciso in the 1970s where he became a a speechwriter for Harvey Milk. He also had a small role in the film Milk.

He was the author of 16 books, 3 of which were made into films, The Power, The Glass Inferno (made into The Towering Inferno) and The Gold Crew.

Dustin Lance Black paid tribute to the author saying, 'This morning FRANK M. ROBINSON left this world. He was Milk's speech writer, an acclaimed sci-fi author and was like a father to me. To say the earth feels made of quicksand lately makes it sound too solid. Frank, I'll miss your thunderous laughter, your protective love and your razor sharp writer's mind. #HarveyMilk'

A note on Frank's website notes meeting Dustin Lance Black and the making of Milk saying, 'An amazing experience. They had a guy picked out to play me--met him later on--and then Sean Penn, Gus van Sant (director), and Lance Black (screenwriter--smart, talented, a workhorse and friendly) came over to the house and Penn interviewed me for an hour and a half about Harvey (I used to be Harvey's speechwriter). Afterward, took them all to dinner at an upscale Burmese restaurant on Castro. Sean had to leave early and I entertained Gus and Lance with tales about Rogue and Playboy. Naturally they were fascinated (translation: bored stiff).'
