Synopsis: Gay teen Tim (Tyler Ross) and his two best friends Laura (Alison Torem) and Brea (Molly Kunz) spend their last summer before college grappling with their feelings about the fundamentalist Baptist beliefs of their families, and prepping for the Passion Play at their church. Preacher’s daughter Brie is having a crisis of faith while Laura quotes Leviticus to Tim. Meanwhile, Tim draws strength from the support of his PFLAG Dad as he copes with the twists and turns of late adolescence — including a complex relationship with the church drama teacher (writer-director Stephen Cone in a terrific performance) who struggles with his own sexuality.

THE WISE KIDS is one of those rare films that both transcend and embody the label “gay film.”  The story resonates intensely with gay viewers while simultaneously offering a universal story of immediate emotional impact to all audiences. Written, directed and acted with perfect poise and confidence (including a stand-out turn by Tyler Ross, star of Nate & Margaret and Milkshake as Tim), this complex and beautiful film is an unforgettable gem — an authentic and insightful portrayal of youth, faith and coming of age.

GLAAD MIAMI COUNCIL LAUNCHES WITH CO-CHAIRS LAUREN FOSTER, SARAH ARISON AND MARYSOL PATTON

Marysol Patton, Star of Real Housewives of Miami, Featured in New PSA with Transgender Model Lauren Foster

(GayWebSource, com) – December 20, 2012—GLAAD, the nation’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) media advocacy organization, announced formation of a leadership council in Miami with Co-Chairs Lauren Foster, Sarah Arison and Marysol Patton.

Transgender model Lauren Foster will be working with GLAAD to raise visibility for transgender Americans throughout 2013. Earlier this month, she filmed a PSA for the “Trans People Speak” video series, a project of the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition which is sponsored by GLAAD. The PSA, which will be released next year, also features Foster’s friend Marysol Patton, star of BRAVO’s Real Housewives of Miami.

“Lauren is a passionate and smart woman who has not only helped our organization, but our entire community,” said GLAAD President Herndon Graddick. “We are thrilled to work with her going forward in an effort to raise visibility for transgender people.”

Lauren Foster is a South African model. She is one of the world’s most recognized trans women, having been the first to be featured in a fashion editorial in VOGUE Mexico. In 2000 and 2001 she worked with the iconic performer, Grace Jones. Foster has counseled juvenile runaways facing questions on gender identity. This year she became the first transgender woman to appear on the Real Housewives franchise, recently appearing in two episodes of The Real Housewives of Miami. She has a successful career in public relations at the prestigious MIAMI Institute for Age Management & Intervention located in the Four Seasons in Miami’s Brickell district.

“Allies like Marysol and Sarah are crucial to growing support and understanding for transgender people and the entire LGBT community,” said Herndon Graddick. “With their help, we know we will be able to have a successful and impactful role in helping LGBT people in Miami and around the country feel supported and loved.”

Sarah Arison and Patton will work with Foster to plan upcoming events in the Miami area to support GLAAD’s work to change the culture in support of LGBT equality.

Arison is a native of Miami, Florida who relocated to New York City four years ago after graduating Emory University to begin a career with W Magazine.  She is currently working as a film producer and participates in various local charities and organizations.

“I am surrounded by so many wonderful friends and family who are part of the LGBT community. I’m honored to be able to work with GLAAD to grow acceptance and build support for them in our community” said Arison.

Since 2002, Miami native Marysol Patton has run one of the strongest and most respected public relations firms in the country, The Patton Group (TPG). She was nominated as the Miami Chapter of the American Cancer Society’s Most Dynamic Woman of the Year in 2003 and has served as Honorary Chair of the Make-A-Wish Gala, Board of the Vizcayans, Viscayan Gala Co-Chair, Vizcaya Preservation Luncheon Chair, Lucky Brand Gala committee and Saks Fifth Avenue’s “Key to the Cure” committee, among others.

The GLAAD Miami leadership council is comprised of volunteer leaders who provide critical on-the-ground support and leadership for GLAAD in the Miami area. As the local voice and face of GLAAD, the Miami leadership council is working on a gala in 2013.

5,185 Civil Unions in Illinois Since they Began in 2011

We are seeing a push for equal marriage at every level of Government throughout Illinois…

(GayWebSource.com) – December 20, 2012 • Chicago, Illinois – The Civil Rights Agenda (TCRA), the leading and largest Illinois Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) civil rights advocacy organization, has conducted a survey of every county in Illinois and found that there have been 5,185 civil union licenses issued in Illinois since civil unions began in June of 2011. These results come as the General Assembly prepares to vote on the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act (HB5170) as early as January.

“Almost 5200 couples have chosen to join in civil union to gain the state-level protections that are afforded to couples in a marriage,” stated Rick Garcia, Director of the Equal Marriage Illinois Project and Senior Policy Advisor of The Civil Rights Agenda. “The majority of these couples are same-sex couples, and civil unions do not provide the protections that marriage does. We still find couples in emergency rooms that have problems explaining their relationship. Nobody knows what a civil union is, but everyone knows what a marriage is and we must treat every family equally and with the same respect. We are seeing a push for equal marriage at every level of Government throughout Illinois and the polling has sent a clear message that the time for marriage in Illinois is now.”

The survey was concluded as of 12/18/2012.

Rick Garcia, The Civil Rights Agenda’s Director of the Equal Marriage Illinois Project, was the lead lobbyist and organizer for the passage of the civil union legislation in Illinois.

TCRA Responds to Creation of Anti-gay Marriage Coalition

These are just the same old tired anti-gay groups and individuals…

(GayWebSource.com) – December 19, 2012 • Chicago, Illinois – The Civil Rights Agenda (TCRA), the leading and largest Illinois Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) civil rights advocacy organization, has learned that a group of anti-gay organizations has established the “Coalition to Protect Children and Marriage.”

“These are just the same-old tired anti-gay groups and individuals that have fought against gay protections for years,” stated Rick Garcia, Director of the Equal Marriage Illinois Project and Senior Policy Advisor of The Civil Rights Agenda. “They have lost in the past and they will lose again. Their position is to uphold bigotry, not faith-based values or to promote the family.  Families in America come in all shapes and sizes, and the rights provided by the equal marriage bill are needed to protect the over 5100 loving families that are in civil union throughout Illinois. Over 300 clergy have endorsed equal marriage and. polling shows that Illinois is ready for it.”

For the first time in Illinois, a May poll by Victoria Research showed majority support for same-sex marriage at 52 percent. A poll by the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute released in September showed 44 percent of Illinoisans are in favor of same-sex marriage, which was a 10-percentage-point increase in support in Illinois in just two years.

Scientific studies consistently show that a child’s “adjustment, development and psychological well-being of children are unrelated to parental sexual orientation and that the children of lesbian and gay parents are as likely as those of heterosexual parents to flourish.

Rick Garcia, The Civil Rights Agenda’s Director of the Equal Marriage Illinois Project, was the lead lobbyist and organizer for the passage of the civil union legislation in Illinois and is available for interviews.
